Job Summary:
The general purpose of this position is to oversee the production and operation of the Production Department to assure that operations are conducted efficiently while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
Principal Duties:
1. Analyzes production needs in the Production Department to coordinate employees and equipment necessary to operate at maximum efficiency.
2. Aid in the development and implementation of Food Safety Fundamentals and Food Safety Plan as outlined in the BRC system.
3. Has the authority to take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the BRC system.
4. Works effectively with all production employees to maintain and improve statistics for pounds per man hour, overhead costs, yields, and direct labor costs for the plant and keeps records of these and other production statistics for the department. Maintains specific goals for labor costs when scheduling permanent and temporary employees.
5. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product, and suggests changes to increase efficiency of the Production Department.
6. Supervises workers in the Production Department, including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating them. Recommends methods to motivate workers to achieve goals. Recommends personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, discharges, and disciplinary measures. Acts in accordance with established grievance procedures.
7. Explains internal and government required safety and quality standards to workers and monitors adherence to such standards. Conducts accident investigations according to established procedures and completes associated reports.
8. Inspects materials received in order to assure acceptable quality and quantity. Completes and maintains records of received shipments.
9. Participates as a member of the safety committee to establish internal procedures to conform to government required safety standards and monitors such procedures.
10. Confers with Quality Control Manager to ensure that quality standards are maintained.
11. Performs monthly physical inventory of materials and supplies for the Production Department and prepares related documentation.
12. Maintains ongoing inventory of raw materials, packing materials and miscellaneous supplies for the Production Department.
13. Monitors and maintains machines and equipment in the Production Department to ensure performance at maximum output.
14. Prepares samples for sales. Coordinates and implements changes in packaging.
15. Confers with Plant Manager to coordinate above activities.
16. Coaching and training employees.
17. Performs other duties as may be required.
Principal Contacts:
Frequently interacts with the plant manager, quality control, other production managers, supervisors, and line workers. Regular outside contact with vendors.
Position Requirements:
1. Minimum 5 years of experience in the food industry in order to have significant knowledge of food technology and industry trends in equipment and production.
2. General knowledge of the fish industry and Vita Food’s products.
3. Ability to supervise and motivate employees effectively.
4. Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills needed to coordinate activities with the plant manager and production personnel and effectively deal with staff in other departments.
5. Strong analytical skills needed to evaluate production methods to ensure maximum efficiency.
6. Ability to plan and organize workflow.
7. Familiarity with using personal computers, including spreadsheets and word processing software packages.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality of company information.
9. Ability to maintain pleasant working relationships with staff and management.
10. Ability to maneuver on wet, slippery floors. Generally needs to push, pull and lift up to 50 lbs.
11. Green Belt Six Sigma Certification
12. HACCP Certification
13. A college degree in Business Management is a Plus
14. Bilingual is a plus
